ENGL 1893 - Literature OT and Ancient Worlds

3 credits

An introductory course to the Old Testament and the religion of ancient Israel. The focus of the course is on the primary literature of Israel’s religious traditions – the Old Testament – with due attention paid to the historical time period out of which these traditions develop.  A holistic understanding of the Old Testament world includes the study of some of the outstanding classics of the ancient Near East and Greece. The course is also concerned with providing the student with a basic sense of Old Testament theology and to provide the student with a background for advanced studies in the OT and a more thorough engagement with the New Testament. At the end of the course, students are familiar with the Old Testament narrative, have the ability to define different sections of the Old Testament literature, and feel comfortable with identifying historical periods associated with ancient Israel.
(This course is also offered through our concurrent credit program.)
