BIBL 3133 - The Psalms as Christian Worship

3 credits

This course is an introduction and orientation to the Book of Psalms in its historical, canonical and theological contexts. Students will develop interpretive skills through close readings of specific psalms, application of critical methods, and exploration of major theological themes that span the entire Psalter. Alongside literary analysis of Hebrew poetry and consideration of psalm texts in their original historical context, a major point of emphasis will be how these canonical witnesses to the prayer and worship of ancient Israel might continue to shape and sustain faithful Christian worship in contemporary contexts.
Prerequisite: BIBL 1053 - The Christian Scriptures  and BIBL 2553 - Biblical Interpretation
